[25] Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, (John 11:25 ESV)
The context of this passage is when Lazarus is in the grave and Martha told Jesus had he arrived earlier Lazarus would not have died (see John 11:21-24). There will come a time when you will experience death through your family or a friend . When this happens, most often, what do you see? A service with beautiful flowers, a beautiful rectangular box, and the body in this box is dressed perfectly and looks the way the person did when alive. Why is this? Today’s society does not like to think much of death. We expect the medical community to find cures for illness to ensure we live longer. In our prayer meetings more prayer is requested for healing of the body rather than delivering of the soul. It seems that the church fears death more than loving God. Many who are believers act as if they will never see their saved loved one again. However, Jesus has told you that He is the resurrection and the life and those that believe in Him will live forever. Not only will the resurrection be brought about by Christ but He is the Resurrection (author emphasis). Resurrection from the dead and fellowship with God are both part of the resurrection of which Jesus speaks. Physical death is the path to eternal life with God and as you see John wrote that Jesus used the phrase “I am,” you see the deity of Christ. Jesus and God are one. This resurrection is the hope for those that believe of being with God when the body breathes its last breath and the spirit truly begins to live.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 ESV)
Therefore, as a believer in Jesus Christ, you do not fear death, however, you should fear for those who could die without Jesus as Savior. Knowing this should give you a passion for telling others of Jesus.
For Thought:
1. There should be urgency in your daily walk to tell others about Jesus.
2. No matter how you may feel about someone, you would not desire him or her to be condemned to Hell because you failed to tell him or her about Jesus.
3. If you are unsure what to say to someone, just tell them what Jesus has meant in your life.
As you seek time with the Father, thank Him for calling you to saving faith in Jesus Christ. Thank Him for coming to this world in the flesh so you may be with God eternally. Ask God to show you true peace from the thought of death, so you may live for Christ and others see the joy in your life.
Death is no big deal. Death only opens up eternal life. This is our hope. – John McArthur
