Matthew 6
13 And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

In Greek the phrase we translate “evil one” is tou ponērou and speaks of Satan. It is Satan who tempts us into doing that which is against God and keeps you from following His will and it is done in order to destroy your witness. The best defense against the tempter and temptation is to turn to God for your strength and direction. By asking God to keep you from the temptation of Satan, you are asking God to give you the power to overcome these temptations and this He will gladly do.
The Parable of the Sower
Matthew 13
19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. [ESV]
The gospel message is the seed placed by Jesus, the sower, thus all seeds are good seeds. In this parable it is the soil that the emphasis is placed. In this case the soil is not good and the seed is snatched away by the evil one, Satan. As a child of God the seed has been placed on “good soil”. It is up to you to absorb the warmth and food that is the Word of God and grow in His Wisdom.
For Thought:
1. The Bible tells us Satan is a fallen angel and not an example of evil as some would have you believe.
2. Do you see the difference between what God tells you is “good” and what Satan says is “good”?
3. To ask God to deliver you from the temptations of the “evil one” is asking God to give you the strength and direction to overcome that which is against Him.
Paul writes that there is no temptation so strong that you cannot overcome it. God gives you the power and the ability to endure all temptation put in your path. The choice is yours. [1 Corinthians 10:13]
Prayer
I know LORD as your child you will watch over me and protect me as Satan puts temptation in my path. May I be granted the strength to stand in your power and overcome all that the evil one does to try and destroy my witness for You and Your Son, Jesus. In doing so I will walk in Your path and learn from Your word.
