On the blog site of Kevin DeYoung I found a subject about denominations. The title is "In Praise of Denomination" written by Jason Helopoulos. I too, am concerned about the loss of identity by many as the tide of being non-denominational continues. I'm sure those seeking a non-denominational church see a positive in belonging to a church that is of that order but I suggest there to be more pitfalls. Jason really brings forth the argument for denominations, which I agree with. I know a lot of people do not want to be labeled or fit into a certain box but this can foster a lack of knowledge with doctrine. A short coming I have seen in many of today's churches. There should be a reason why you are Baptist or Methodist and there are differences in a reformed church and a non-reformed church. Why do you believe in a Augustinian, or Calvinism, or Wesleyanism doctrine. Or are you a follower of Pentecostalism ? Are you a Synergist or a Monergist ? There is a difference. These are important
questions but honestly most church members can not tell me why they
believe a doctrine or belong to a certain denomination or for that
matter a non-denomination.Why is this important to me? Because if you don't have a sense of what, where, and how you believe then you may begin to follow a person instead of Jesus. This is how many false churches get started and why many of faith are lured into cults. Don't become numbered with those in a false belief. Study the Bible and read the writings of the early church fathers. Look for books that carry a study of doctrine and and study Theology for it truly is the study of God.
